Kenroku-en garden used to be a part of garden in Kanazawa Castle.

As for the history of a garden, a sloping land facing the castle is old. Kaga domain descendant in the fifth generation・Maeda Tsunanori moved a work place located at this place to the castle, constructed a lotus pond which used to be called Renchi-ochin, then made a garden around there.

This is the start of the garden, which used to be called Renchi-teior so at that time.

Entering inside, there are about 20 mysterious classic spots surrounded by forests.

We are introducing a few of them this time.

With a height of 6.6 meters and a width of 1.6 meters, it boasts abundant water volume and a loud sound, pleasing both the eyes and ears. Its grandeur and power are unmatched in other gardens, making it one of the most exceptional garden landscapes in Kenrokuen. It is also known as the “Autumn Leaves Waterfall.”

Additional Information:

Hyoike Pond is characterized by its distinctive gourd-shaped appearance. During our visit this time, the tranquil sound of water flowing from Midori Falls softly echoed into Hyoike Pond.

Its tree shape is the best in the garden, and as for the famous object in winter「snow hanged rope」, they start its work operation from this pine in November.

The grand aspect of snow hanged rope is a representative scenery in winter Kenroku-en garden.

The method of snow hanged rope is done by so-called「apple hanging」, which is, to build a pillar at the center of pine tree, then from the pillar, to stretch ropes radially to the pine tree.

At night, the entire garden is lightened up.

Particularly, as Karasaki pine of the state of preparing snow hanged ropes is very beautiful, if you have a chance to visit Kenroku-en garden, please be sure to see it.

The following is the history of Kanazawa shrine, quoted from Wikipedia.

In 1794, Kaga domain 11th feudal lord Maeda Harunaga established and constructed domain school Meirin hall. At that time, as its shinto shrine on Buddhist temple grounds dedicated to the tutelary deity of the area, and also considered to be a god of study and Maeda family’s ancestor, Sugawara Michizane was prayed and served shrine was established to construct, which was the start.

When Kenroku-en garden was improved, Meirin hall was moved to another place, but the shrine still remained there.

It was called as Takezawa palace local diety Tenmangu shrine which was constructed by 12th generation feudal lord Maeda Narinaga.

In the shrine, there are a god of keeping off disaster, white snake dragon god, a god of traffic safety, Konpira great god, a god of prosperous business god, Hakuashi Inari great gracious god, all together deified. It was prayed for prosperity and peace by all the feudal.

Visiting and praying to the shrine were only allowed on April 25 and September 25 as the annual festival and only allowed for female of the castle town before Meiji era.

In 1874, conforming with the opening for public, Kenroku-en garden became possible for those to freely visit and pray.

In 1876, its name was changed to Kanazawa shrine.

As a god of keeping off disaster, white snake dragon god’s shintai bodies are a couple of male and female.

A body was placed in this shrine, and the other was placed in the palace of Kanazawa castle, which were deified by the wives all through the feudal generations. In 1946, a body was moved to this shrine.

As a god of prosperous business, Hakuashi Inari great gracious god, after Meiji restoration, when Maeda family moved to live in Tokyo, it was translated to their house. After that time, by an old feudal retainer’s pleading, it was returned to this shrine again.

Among the shrines which Sugawara Michizane as a god of study is deified, because it was the feudal school shrine located closest to the urban area of Kanazawa city too, many students who will take exam gather here for praying for success in the entrance exam season every year.

In 2004, the main shrine and the front shrine were registered as a national tangible cultural property.
